Gregory Baruso, a former 36-year firefighter and current Deputy State Fire Marshal for the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office, has announced his candidacy for South King Fire Commission.

Greg shared, “I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with stakeholders, firefighters, and the public to share with them why I’m running and my vision for South King Fire. I firmly believe that it’s time for a change and to bring in new energy to working together to serve our community”.

Baruso is committed to promoting collaboration, transparency, and openness in the South King Fire Board of Commission. He believes that knowledge is power and will strive to create opportunities for the public to become more informed about the importance of the Fire Commission and its work.

Baruso’s experience managing budgets and funding while with the Port of Seattle Fire Department, has given him a deep understanding of how to make sound decisions that are razor-focused on managing taxpayer dollars. He stated, “As a firefighter with 36 years of experience, I know firsthand that the fire department is service-based and directly affects residents. I believe that having a watchful eye and making the best possible financial decisions will have a positive long-term effect on how to serve the community.”

Baruso believes that South King Fire needs to invest in the future of the fire department to ensure that the department is not only thriving but prepared for future growth. Along with recruitment policies, Baruso will look to building a more modern fire department that includes modernizing buildings, reviewing capital improvements, and department policies that foster a pro-family, pro-firefighter environment.

Greg has previously served as a Federal Way Councilmember and was a long-time member of the Diversity Commission. Greg and his wife, Shawn have two grown kids that graduated from the FWPS.
